Background:

From the UN Website: “United Nations Universal Children’s Day was established in 1954 and is celebrated on November 20th each year to promote international togetherness, awareness among children worldwide, and improving children’s welfare.

November 20th is an important date as it is the date in 1959 when the UN General Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child. It is also the date in 1989 when the UN General assembly adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child..the most widely ratified international human rights treaty. Universal Children’s Day offers each of us an inspirational entry-point to advocate, promote and celebrate children’s rights, translating into “dialogues and actions that will build a better world for Children.”

The POP-UP Festival pursues the goal to establish “dialogues and actions that will build a better world for Children.”

Press Release

September 12, 2017, San Francisco

In only two weeks since the launch of the global POP-UP Festival for emotions, wellbeing, and children’s rights, volunteers from 55 countries and 102 organizations have signed up to bring a joyful educational experience to over 80,000 children, parents and teachers. The collaboration honors the United Nations’ Universal Children’s Day, commemorating the signing of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, the most-signed human rights legislation in history.

According to the United Nations, the purpose of this day is to encourage people to, “advocate, promote and celebrate children’s rights, translating into dialogues and actions that will build a better world for Children.” The POP-UP Festival does just this. By engaging volunteers around the world, the celebration fosters dialogue about essential skills for awareness and wellbeing.

Some of the rights recognized by the Convention (UNCRC) include protection from dangerous conditions such as forced labor or abuse. Other elements of the UNCRC speak to equipping children to thrive by supporting play, learning… and even the right have an opinion. One of the organizers of the POP-UP Festival, ceo of Six Seconds (the global nonprofit coordinating the event), Joshua Freedman says: “Many of the rights in UNCRC are the responsibility of nations and lawyers. But laws alone are not enough. If children, parents and teachers don’t have the commitment to wellbeing – and the skills to advocate, communicate and problem-solve – then will not solve the problems we face. So the POP-UP Festival brings forward that most essential ingredient: Heart.”

Based on the global response, Freedman is correct. The outpouring of energy with the launch of the event shows that people around the world want to create some good news — and recognize the unstoppable power of love for the children.  It seems caring is contagious, and POP-UP Festivals are the remedy.
