EQ Drives Team Performance Across Industries in the UK

Is EQ coaching effective? Four different teams – in Tech, Finance, Telecommunications and Professional Services – outperformed control groups on key engagement and performance measures after participating in EQ coaching.

Overview

Situation: The four teams faced unique challenges related to teamwork, but shared the same goal: increase team engagement and performance.

Solution: Six Seconds’ partner, Greengrass Consulting, worked with the teams to measure and improve the key drivers of individual and team performance, and address each team’s specific issues.

Results: An average 20% increase in team engagement across the four teams, which fueled increases on 90% of team KPIs such as trust, motivation, and execution.

Here is a graph of one team’s improvement over a 6-month period, including a doubling of the percent of Engaged employees:

“It’s opened the door to us being more honest with each other – and that’s vital if we are going to deliver all of the things that we want to as a team.  The work on purpose has been particularly helpful as I think it’s given all of us the foundation to build on.”

Situation

The four teams all came from public limited companies headquartered in the UK, ranging in size from 1,500 to 72,000 employees. They each faced unique problems related to teamwork: One of the teams had recently been formed and was still in the process of ‘norming,’ or establishing protocols for interacting as a team. Another had been formed from two teams and was in the process of re-engaging. The final two teams had been working together for some time but lacked cohesiveness and effective communication strategies. Each agreed to participate in an EQ coaching intervention to increase team effectiveness.

Solution

The four teams participated in a four-month EQ intervention comprised of assessments, group workshops and individual coaching. The group workshops consisted of four 4-hour sessions, each spread a month apart. At the beginning, each team took the Team Vital Signs assessment which formed a framework for action and helped the group establish goals moving forward. Then each interactive group workshop went deeper into the theory and practice of emotional intelligence, as it related to each team’s goals and objectives. In between the second and third sessions, each group member had a 1-on-1 coaching session based on the results of the SEI assessment, providing an opportunity to go deeper on a personal level.
