Given the growing body of research that social emotional learning (SEL) can help people with achievement, relationships, wellbeing and make better decisions, colleges and universities are beginning to seek effective SEL solutions for students as well as faculty & staff.
July 15 SEL for Equity in Higher Education
Colleges and universities are increasingly aware of the urgent need to deconstruct racism, sexism & other systemic inequities — how? While much of the needed change is in the systems, what is the “inner work of equity” that will equip people in these institutions to have the conversations needed to do the systemic work? What are the social & emotional skills that support this? And what are culturally responsive methods to bring those skills forward in a way that works?
July 16 SEL for Teacher Training
What are the essential skills aspiring educators must develop in order to be effective at the “people side” of education? While there’s a growing body of research suggesting social emotional learning (SEL) is invaluable for students, few educators have participated in a robust SEL program in their own education. Often attributed to Aristotle, “Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all” — does this apply to teacher education programs as well?
According to American Psychological Association (APA) there has been a 33% increase in suicide from 1999 through 2017; it is the 2nd leading cause of death for 18- to 24-year-olds. In the Cigna/Ipsos 2018 research, Generation Z (ages 18-22) are significantly more likely than any other generation to say they experience the feelings described in the statements associated with loneliness — more than half are lonely, and loneliness has the same impact on mortality as smoking 15 cigarettes a day, making it even more dangerous than obesity. Given the vital importance of young people’s mental well-being, social emotional learning is being viewed as one of the most valuable personal resources. There’s a growing body of research showing the skills of SEL can help young people achieve more effective results, be and feel better, make better decisions, and form stronger relationships.
Currently, SEL is a fairly new concept in higher ed. Research suggests that SEL initiatives in higher education operate as a piecemeal approach due to its nature, whereas a systematic operation is absent. At Six Seconds, we understand the value and power of an SEL education.The SEL and Higher Ed Virtual Conference will discuss the challenges and successes of implementing SEL in meaningful and intentional ways specifically for higher ed. The webinar will focus on overcoming barriers and best practices to implement SEL at institutions campus-wide by making SEL part of its mission and culture through different approaches.

Anabel Jensen, Ph.D.
President & Cofounder, Six Seconds
For nearly 50 years, Dr. Anabel Jensen has pioneered the instruction of emotional intelligence competencies. Dr. Jensen is the President of Six Seconds, and was the principal of the Nueva School when Daniel Goleman came and wrote about the model emotional intelligence program there; under her guidance the school also won two Federal Blue Ribbon Awards for Excellence in Education. Dr. Jensen has co-authored four books on teaching EQ (including Self-Science, one of the first published SEL curricula) and received her Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley.
Anabel’s noble goal is, “to use my voice to teach compassion and accountability so that integrity floods the earth.”
Brian Perkins, Ph.D.
Director of the Summer Principals Academy, Columbia University
Dr. Perkins has served as an executive coach and consultant to leaders around the world. An advocate for social emotional learning, he holds that to successfully lead others, one must be grounded and know oneself holistically. Dr. Perkins is also Director of the Urban Education Leadership Programs at Columbia University Teachers College, and the former Chair and Professor of Education Law and Policy at Southern Connecticut State University.

Deborah Donahue-Keegan, Ed.D.
Associate Director, Tisch College SEL-CE Initiative Tufts University
Dr. Deborah Donahue-Keegan is a Senior Fellow in the Jonathan M. Tisch College of Civic Life at Tufts University, and a faculty member in the Tufts Department of Education. Deborah also directs the Tisch College Initiative on Social Emotional Learning and Civic Engagement (SEL-CE). Deborah’s current research and teaching focus on social emotional learning, equity, and well-being in higher education, with focus on faculty professional development. She serves on the Advisory Board for SEL4US (SEL Alliance for the U.S.), a national advocacy organization. Deborah also serves on the steering committee for SEL4MA (SEL Alliance for Massachusetts). She co-founded and co-leads the Massachusetts Consortium for Social-Emotional Learning in Teacher Education (MA SEL-TEd). Deborah has presented on her SEL-focused research and practice at numerous conferences and thought leader gatherings. She has also authored a number of articles and chapters on SEL and educator professional development.
Lorea Martinez, Ph.D.

Founder of HEART in Mind Consulting & Adjunct at Columbia Teachers College; SEL Consultant at Six Seconds; author of The EQ Educator. Lorea supports schools and teachers as they integrate SEL in their programs and teaching practices and works with New Schools Venture Fund, Learning Policy Institute, Nearpod, and public, private, and charter schools. Her research is focused on school climate, SEL implementation, and principals’ emotional intelligence.

Tia N. Barnes
Assistant Professor in Human Development and Family Sciences at the University of Delaware
Dr. Tia N. Barnes’ research focuses on the use of social-emotional learning and culturally responsive pedagogy to support the well-being of disenfranchised populations. Currently, Dr. Barnes is the principal investigator for a Delaware Department of Health and Social Services -funded grant to examine the physical and mental health, social media use, and discrimination experiences of Black girls ages 10-19 in the state of Delaware.
Dr. Barnes received her doctorate in August 2013 from the University of Florida where she majored in special education with an emphasis on emotional and/or behavioral disorders and minored in research and evaluation methodology. She then worked at the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence where her work focused on classroom environment for students with EBD and examining social emotional learning through a culturally responsive lens.
Sue McNamara, Ph.D.
Regional Network Director, Asia-Pacific, Six Seconds
Sue McNamara has over 25 years of experience in the field of leadership and training and over 15 years in the field of education. Sue’s work in education focuses on site-wide implementation of emotional intelligence – from measuring and developing student EQ, to supporting leaders, educators, counsellors and caregivers to create a positive climate for learning. Projects range from introductory programs to raise awareness through to multi-year implementations to create an optimal climate for learning.
Likewise, in business and government, Sue supports change makers to go from introducing EQ as a performance driver, to integrating emotional intelligence into organizational systems and structures. Projects include assessment and coaching, strategic planning, customized program development, and train-the-trainer processes to build capacity.
Sue is an Adjunct Associate Professor with the Faculty of Engineering at the National University of Singapore.
Solafa Batterjee M.A.

An Empathy Catalyst in non profit – a Change Agent in EQ & learning & Education for a better world & Future. Solafa is the Chief Executive Officer of Doroob Endowment Company, activating education in Saudi, Sudan & Kenya — and part of the BAC/ Board Advisory Committee for INJAZ -Saudi Arabia برنامج إنجاز السعودية. She is the Education Ambassador of Generation 2030 by Misk Foundation, showcasing Leader Saudi women on the Times Square Screens in New York City. She has participated in the leading role of women in humanitarian and education in many international conferences and is a TED speaker. She is an active ambassador, Certified Facilitator, Assessor & Coach, leading the partnership of Saudi Arabia with Six Seconds Emotional Intelligence Network. Sheldon L. Eakins, Ph.D.
Founder of the Leading Equity Center and host of the Leading Equity Podcast
Sheldon L. Eakins, Ph.D. is an accomplished K-12 educator and administrator. He has taught at the elementary, middle, and high school levels during his career in the states of Florida, Louisiana and in St. Croix, US Virgin Islands. Dr. Eakins also served several years as a school principal in the states of Louisiana and Oregon.
Currently, Dr. Eakins serves as the Director of Special Education at the Shoshone-Bannock School District in Fort Hall, ID.
Dr. Eakins has a B.S. degree in Social Science Education, a M.S. degree in Higher Education Leadership, and a Ph.D. in K-12 Education. He maintains professional certifications in Grades 6-12 in the State of Idaho. Dr. Eakins is a prolific conference presenter at the regional, national, and international levels, and he has been successful in recently obtaining grants and foundation awards for debt reduction, technology, scholarships, and capital improvements.
Claudia Wiedeman, Ph.D.
Director of Education, USC Shoah Foundation
The USC Shoah Foundation harnesses the power of its archive of personal testimonies from witnesses to genocide to develop empathy, understanding and respect through testimony.
Claudia Ramirez Wiedeman oversees the strategic direction of the Institute’s global education program. Working with a mighty team of subject matter experts, digital gurus and program managers, Claudia ensures that testimony-based educational resources and digital tools are made accessible widely via the Institute’s flagship educational website, IWitness and other platforms. Through a network of global dynamic partnerships, a spirit of innovation and evidence-based methodologies and practices, Claudia and team continues to bring about positive change in almost every corner of the world. Claudia received her Ph.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles in Education and Applied Linguistics and previously held a tenured position at a liberal arts university before arriving at the Institute.
Liza Johnson, Ed.D.
Director of Personal Empowerment and Assistant Director to the President for the University of Dubuque
Dr. Liza Johnson is the Director of Personal Empowerment, Assistant Director to the President for the University of Dubuque (UD), and an EQ Ambassador for Six Seconds. She is the author of a forthcoming SEL curriculum for higher education, a workbook to grow personal and professional success through EQ based on field-tested methods from the program at UD. This curriculum is systematically implemented campus-wide that includes a 3-credit undergraduate course that fulfills a general education requirement. Liza is also working closely with the Dubuque Community Schools, police, and city government on a community-wide implementation plan of emotional intelligence.
Yasmin Al Bulushi, Ph.D.
Member of Board of Trustees, Muscat University, Oman
Dr. Yasmin Al Bulushi is the first female dean in the private higher education in the Sultanate. She was the dean of Muscat College, prior to that she was the Assistant dean for Academic Support and Students’ Affairs in the College of Banking and Financial Studies, Oman. She is an educationalist who is passionate about making change in people’s life through education. Dr Yasmeen is a member of Board of Trustee- Muscat University , Oman
Susan Charles, Ed.D.

Kelisa Wing, Ed. S.
Author, Becoming a Globally Competent Teacher
Kelisa Wing has been in education for 14 years. Her journey into the teaching profession began after she was honorably discharged from the United States Army. She served as a Youth Consultant for the Self-Expression Teen Theater (SETT) under the United Way in Toledo, Ohio. After moving to Germany with her family, she began substitute teaching, then transitioned to a Special Education paraprofessional, was a school secretary, and eventually, an Administrative Officer. She then taught 8th-grade Language Arts and Reading to military-connected students at Faith Middle School in Fort Benning, Georgia, has been an Elementary School Assistant Principal in West Point, New York, and is now a Professional Development Specialist in Virginia. Kelisa honorably served in the U.S. Army for six years and attained the rank of Staff Sergeant.
Ms. Wing is the author of ‘Conversations’ (2006), ‘Weeds & Seeds: How To Stay Positive in the Midst of Life’s Storms’ (2017), ‘Promises and Possibilities: Dismantling the School to Prison Pipeline’ (2018), ‘If I Could: Lessons for Navigating an Unjust World‘, and a contributing author of ‘Becoming a Globally Competent Teacher’ (ASCD, 2019). She is a 2017 State Teacher of the Year, a 2016 Association of Supervision, Curriculum, and Development (ASCD) Emerging Leader, and the 2017 UMUC Edward Parnell Outstanding Alumnus of the Year. She is the only educator on the Education Civil Rights Alliance (ECRA) Steering Committee, and is a member of the Leading Educator Ambassadors for Equity (LEAE). As a member of the National Network of State Teachers of the Year (NNSTOY), she has led efforts for mentoring teacher leaders through a partnership with 100Kin10, and she is also a member of ASCD. She is also on the Advisory Board for the Learner Variability Project (LVP) & Digital Promise, ASCD’s Global Advisory Council, and the ASCD College Football Playoff Foundation (CFP) Diversifying the Teacher Pipeline Working Group.
Professor Roisin P. Corcoran, CPsychol, Ph.D., FBPsS, FAcSS

Professor Roisin P. Corcoran is Chair in Education and Professor at the University of Nottingham. Previously she worked at UCD, Johns Hopkins University and Yale University. She was named a Fellow of the British Psychological Society and a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences. Professor Corcoran’s research interest lies in the development, implementation and evaluation of evidence-based educational programmes and competency-based tools for children and adults. She is the co-author of the book Developing Emotionally Competent Teachers: Emotional Intelligence and Pre-Service Teacher Education. She is the principal investigator of a systematic review of effective programmes for social and emotional learning that is funded by the Jacobs Foundation. She is also the principal investigator of a study titled evidence-based policy and provision for social and emotional learning that is funded by the ESRC impact accelerator award. She has designed and led a series of multiyear, multisite projects-funded by the U.S. Department of Education I3 and foundations-focusing on educational interventions and the mechanisms by which they have their impact on social, emotional and academic outcomes.
Professor Corcoran was the recipient of the American Psychological Association’s early career award in educational psychology, the Johns Hopkins University School of Education’s faculty development committee award, and was named the Association for Psychological Science Rising Star. Professor Corcoran is Executive Editor for the Elsevier journal Teaching and Teacher Education. She was appointed to the Government Cross Whitehall What Works Trial Advice Panel, serves on the American Enterprise Institute Future of American Education Working Group, and has advised the Cabinet Office on educational issues. Cherilyn Leet, M.Ed.

With over a decade of classroom experience, Cherilyn’s goal is to integrate social emotional learning into all levels of education. Cherilyn develops curriculum, assessments, and workshops about emotional intelligence competencies in her role at Six Seconds. An active member of the EQ community in North America, Cherilyn is the recipient of a Fulbright grant, during which she taught students at the university level and developed training programs for faculty in Colombia. Cherilyn holds a Master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction (Gifted and Talented) from Arizona State University.

Angelica is the CEO of Grupo CUDEC, a Mexican academic institution with 45 years’ experience in the field of education. Grupo CUDEC provides service to more than 7000 students starting from Pre-school to Doctoral degree. She has a Bachelor of Science Education with a degree of specialist in pedagogical strategies from La Salle University; she has a Masters in Systemic Pedagogy from Universidad Multicultural CUDEC and is currently studying a PhD in Systemic Pedagogy.
Angelica Malpica Olvera has stood out as an international speaker with topics about Systemic Pedagogy, The Colors of Talent, Family Constellations and Emotional Intelligence. She has inspired thousands of parents, teachers and students from different ages in 18 countries around the world with her charisma and deep way of being. Angelica is the author of “Los Colores del Talento” from Cudec´s publishing house, her book has been distributed in Europe and Latin America.
Founder of Talemted Elementary School in 2013, which is inspired by a constructivist –Systemic pedagogical model. In Talemted students are acknowledge for their inherited talents taking their parents support into consideration.Talemted Elementary School has increased its enrollment 360% since it was found.
During her career, Angelica has coordinated different academic projects in Grupo CUDEC and in other international forums like Six Seconds. She has gained experience as a teacher and teacher trainer.
Angelica who sees things clearly has strong convictions and an innate leadership talent. She spends her everyday life with the self-conviction of going beyond what is already established inspiring people with her firm and loving style.
