Millions of years ago, human life started in Africa. It is home to the first human civilization; where humans first used fire, crafted tools and domesticated animals. Yet Africa, for many reasons, has not kept pace with rest of the world in modern development. On the UN’s list of least developed countries, African nations make up 32 of the least developed 47.
And yet, many African nations’ economies are growing at a rapid clip. The continent as a whole added over $1 trillion to GDP from 2000 to 2015. A number of factors – including a young, urbanizing population and accelerating technological change – point toward continued growth. Africa’s economy is growing. GDP growth alone, though, does not promise a higher quality of life.
Africa has a choice to make. Will this economic growth be unsustainable, benefiting only a few, and environmentally damaging? Or will it be a shared prosperity, helping both people and the environment to thrive?
What will determine which path Africa takes?
“Africans need to think about the seeds they’re sowing for the generations to come,” says Mucha Mlingo, an emotional intelligence expert based in Nairobi, Kenya. “And to do that, we have to empower people of all ages, from school children to CEOs, to be courageous, intentional leaders.”
EQ4Africa, a conference dedicated to empowering leaders with emotional intelligence, aims to do just that. Mucha Mlingo and her team at Premier Training Services are hosting the conference to celebrate ongoing EQ initiatives and to invite more partners – from education and business – to participate in this global movement. Together, they aspire to make a world in which Africa looks after its environmental and social impacts for generations to come.
What is Emotional Intelligence? Simply put, Emotional Intelligence is being smart with feelings. It’s the ability to use emotional information to guide thinking and behavior, and achieve one’s goals. The skills of emotional intelligence have been found to help young people be healthier and more successful in school and life, and linked to increased organizational performances in businesses of all sizes. The best part is that these skills are learnable.
