Six Seconds' EQ Model
The SEI measures eight fundamentals of EQ, including emotional literacy, emotional management, and empathy.
The SEI is the only test measuring the Six Seconds Model of Emotional Intelligence
- Know Yourself is increasing self-awareness. It helps people understand their own thoughts, feelings, and actions.
- Choose Yourself is building self-management and self-direction. It helps people follow their intentions and live & lead more consciously.
- Give Yourself is aligning daily choices with a larger sense of purpose. It helps people live and lead more effectively, relate meaningfully with others, and achieve their vision/mission.
The SEI profile is divided into 5 performance zones, with scores for each of the three pursuits, and each EQ competency:
Six Seconds developed the three-part model in 1997 to help people put the theory of emotional intelligence into practice. The model draws on the work of Peter Salovey, Ph.D. (one of Six Seconds' advisory board members), and John Mayer, Ph.D. who first defined EQ as a scientific concept. It also builds on the five components of EQ popularized by Daniel Goleman in his 1995 book, Emotional Intelligence, which endorses Six Seconds' EQ curriculum, Self-Science. Psychometrics
SEI is scored using a sophisticated alogrithm that adjusts for answer style and positive impression, applying language-specific norms on each of the 12 scales plus the two self-correcting indices.

The tool provides a strong factor structure, as detailed in the technical manual, with Cronbach's Alpha coefficients ranging from .733 to .849.
As shown in this graph, SEI is highly predictive of reported life-success outcomes (in this case: Effectiveness + Health + Relationship Quality + Quality of Life).
Training & Certification
For individuals, SEI + phone training is available from the EQ Store.
For business, govt agencies, and large nonprofits, Six Seconds Consulting Group provides training using the SEI for leadership, sales, customer service, and organizational change.
For internal and external consultants:
- SEI is a "Level B" psychometric assessment, certification is required to administer the SEI, except the Strengths Report which is available to any user.
- Six Seconds' certification training is best-in-class. Overall course evaluations avergage 9.4 out of 10, participants typically report the training was far more than they expected.
- Six Seconds provides a full-service assessment process for organizations that want to use the tool without an internal certification (contact us: staff@6seconds.org)
- Certification is also offered in the SEI + EQ Leader Certification.
- Those who attend the Six Seconds EQ Training Certification can qualify for SEI through a 3-hour teleclass.
- In-house certification training is available in using SEI, SEI + Leadership, SEI + Coaching for Performance Management, and SEI + Hiring.
