DANIEL PINK INTERVIEW
Pink points out that today's leaders must build substantive relationships where trust and information flows. Traditional "leadership" is about "pushing people" and "holding them accountable," but this kind of command and control creates resistance and frustration -- which send people to Monster during lunch. Because "organizations need talented people more than talented people need organizations," leaders need to engage and influence people rather than "boss" them. Sounds like a case for EQ.
"What do you get when you add up designer toilet brushes, Frappucinos, increasing obesity, innovation and outsourcing? According to trend-watcher Daniel Pink, it's a new business climate -- that calls for a new breed of leadership." Read the full interview: http://tinyurl.com/klgwu
MEASURING THE X-FACTOR
How do you measure the skills that enable the leadership Pink advocates?
The new SEI Leadership Report applies the latest-generation EQ assessment tool to measure the key competencies for this kind of influence-based leadership. The tool provides a customized leadership strategy with 40 pages of practical ideas for developing and leveraging strengths.

OPTIMISM AND LEADERSHIP
Bruna Martinuzzi explains the Why and How of Optimism for Leaders -- in a highly practical article full of tips and recommended reading:
"Nowhere is optimism perhaps more important than in leading organizations. Highly effective leaders have a transforming effect on their constituents. Among the behavioral indicators of their transformational leadership style, is the gift of being able to convince others that they have the ability to achieve levels of performance beyond what they thought possible. They are able to paint an optimistic and attainable view of the future for their followers: They move others from being stuck in the status quo - "how things are done around here" and help them see "how things could be done better."
This concept is echoed In The Leadership Advantage, an essay which appeared in the Drucker Foundations' Leader to Leader Guide on Mission and Leadership, in which Warren Bennis tells us that constituents need four things from their leaders in order to achieve positive results: meaning or direction; trust (both in the leader and in being trusted by the leader); a sense of hope and optimism; and results."
