    EQ News, June 25, 2002

    Hello EQ Allies!

We just had an awesome experience at the South Africa Emotional Intelligence
Conference. There were many exceptional speakers -- I particularly enjoyed
facilitating a panel including Peter Salovey (US), Esther Orioli (US), Neal Askanasy
(AU), Chris Gerry (UK), and Stephanie Vermeulen (SA). The discussion ranged
from "What EQ skills are personally challenging for you?" To, "What is the
relationship between EQ and spirituality?" And, "Is there a problem with having so
many definitions of EQ?" I wish we could go back in time and video it!!! One of the
conference delegates taped it, I am hoping he will read this message and send me a
    transcript.

The conference was renewing for me because it reminded me what I do this work. I do
nothing else with my work but contribute to liberate the next generation to live a
more whole and healthy life, it will be miraculous and successful. We talked a lot
about human capacity, and making changes in the core of society to create a context
for people to grow up fully alive.

Among the many projects emerging from the conference: All the US speakers agreed
to support a Developing World EQ Fund to promote sustainable initiatives to build
human capacity in the countries that need it the most. The majority of the world's
leaders in the field of EQ were at the conference, and we realized that part of
providing that leadership is tapping some of the wealth of the US and Europe to
support this kind of work in nations where the economy does not allow people to
afford the "luxury" of creating skills for self awareness, positive relationships,
optimism, and self direction. Would you be willing to assist? Please email me.

    In other news:
    - I am in the process of updating http://www.6seconds.org -- feedback please!

    - We are creating a new edition of EQ Today. It would be a HUGE help to me if you
could answer this question: How have you used Self-Science, Handle With Care, the
Handle With Care Journal, or another EQ product to help build emotional intelligence
in your school or organization? What are some specific actions you took? How did
the book or resource help you?

    - Ei(UK) is holding a 1-day conference near London. CSEE's annual Summer
Institutes are an excellent learning opportunity in the US. There are also several
other remarkable events posted on the EQ Event Calendar:

    - Certification: Our July 22-26 course is filling up. We also have a special
training this summer on facilitating Self-Science.

    - MSCEIT: Those of you who are interested in assessment -- in case you did not
know, the "Mayer, Salovey, Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test" is now available
from MHS. (MSCEIT is pronounced like "mesquite.")

Thanks for reading, and please let me know of other news in the EQ world!

    Warmly,
    -Josh
