A History of Leadership in Social Emotional Learning

Established in 1997, Six Seconds is a world leader in emotional intelligence with offices in ten countries and certified consultants in over 75. A pioneer in social emotional learning, Six Seconds’ education programs are enhanced by a transformational learning approach, scientifically validated EQ measures for youth adults, and school climate, several curricula targeted to Six Seconds EQ competencies, and a growing lessons database. Certification programs and resources are available for administrators, teachers, staff, school counselors and support personnel and all school and community leaders.

In researching his 1995 bestselling book, Emotional Intelligence, Daniel Goleman visited the school created by Six Seconds’ founders.  He wrote about Self-Science, our pioneering approach to social emotional learning as one of two model approaches:

“Self-Science is a pioneer, an early harbinger of an idea that is spreading to schools coast to coast…. A list of the contents of Self-Science is an almost point-for-point match with the ingredients of emotional intelligence — and with the core skills recommended as primary prevention for the range of pitfalls threatening children…. Were he alive today, Aristotle, so concerned with emotional skillfulness, might well approve.” He also calls the program “a model for the teaching of emotional intelligence.”

Working with Six Seconds, schools and education organizations can expect:

Customizable educational solutions that get to the heart of your school’s needs — we will help you to develop EQ  competencies in students and teachers, increase student engagement, decrease problem behavior, and boost academic achievement. We offer a multi-tiered approach, curriculum, and excellent tools to measure individual emotional intelligence competencies for students and adults, as well as group, class, and school reports and school climate measures.

  • Skilled and experienced educators who bring both head+heart to the work — our education team members are knowledgable, insightful, caring, and effective — we practice what we teach!  These mentors, trainers, consultants, and coaches work all around the world bringing together rigorous science, proven experience, and powerful learning methodologies.
  • Evidence-based practices — our programs and assessment measures have been rigorously validated, and we continually update our research database.  Six Seconds supports ongoing research and evaluation to maintain the efficacy of SEL implementations, and to continue to advance the case for the life-changing value of effective emotional intelligence teaching.
