Dissertation
A Psycholinguistic Analysis of the Oral Reading Errors of Culturally Different Black Children in Grades One, Three, and Five.
The purpose of this study was to collect and provide an adequate descriptive base of the oral reading performance of culturally different black children in order to provide information for: 1) the development of a reading model (i.e., insights into the complex nature of the reading process); and 2) the improvement of instructional techniques, materials, etc.

Doctoral findings, significantly lower reading scores for black students, allowed the University of California at Berkeley to obtain a $250,000 grant for a replication of the project.

1966               M.Ed., summa cum laude.  Major: Reading Specialist; Minor: Psychology, Brigham Young University, Provo, UT
Thesis
A comparison of Two Methods of Teaching and Oral Reading: Round Robin vs. Closed Book.
The purpose of this study was to determine through a comparison of elementary school pupil achievement, whether "round robin" or "closed book" oral reading institutional procedures resulted in the greater improvement of: silent reading rate and comprehension and listening comprehension.
An analysis of the data indicated: 1) a significant difference at the 5% level for the boys' experimental group for silent reading scores; and 2) a significant difference at the 1% level for the girls' experimental group for the listening scores.
